The Greeks love to celebrate and it is always some celebration going on with local food, traditional music and dance. Below you find a taste of some of the fiestas…

Epiphany – Fota January 6
Epiphany - Fota January 6 - Amorgos Cyclades Greece   The celebration of the light and the day which ends Christmas. It is the day when the priest bless the waters by throwing in a cross in the sea and the boys are jumping in to bring it. It’s a big honour for the boy who takes it. Afterwards, the priest goes from house to house holding a cross and a basil branch that he put into holy water and sprinkle to bless the home.
     
Kapetanios day – the last Sunday before the fast
Kapetanios day - the last Sunday before the fast - Amorgos Cyclades Greece   This festival is celebrated the last Sunday before the Easter fast. One boy from the village is chosen to be the Kapetanios and he “selects” the girl who is his love. The celebration starts in the morning and goes on for 24 hours. You get served fishes, wine and they traditional music and dance goes on until the morning.
     
Kathari Deutera – Clean Monday 7 weeks before Easter Sunday
Kathari Deutera - Clean Monday 7 weeks before Easter Sunday - Amorgos Cyclades Greece   It is the first day of the season of Lent (Saracosti) during which families go for a picnic and fly kites. Clean Monday refers to the leaving behind of sinful attitudes and non-fasting foods. This day people eat food from the sea and fasting food to prepare for the fast.
     
Easter
Easter 8-15 of April 2012 - Amorgos Cyclades Greece   The Greek Orthodox Easter is the biggest celebration in Greece. During Holy week everyday have its own ceremonies and on midnight Saturday after the mass the break the fast by eating the soup majiritsa. Early Sunday morning everyone starts to grill a whole goat for the big Easter lunch.
Some magical moments you can get if you go to Chora on the Good Friday. After the mass there is a procession around the village and the streets are sprinkled with herbs, flowers and full of candle lights.
     
The icon of Virgin Mary
The icon of Virgin Mary - Amorgos Cyclades Greece   On Easter Sunday the icon of Virgin Mary which has its home in the Monastery of Hozoviotissa starts its travel around the island. It is really several copies that is carried around to every church on Amorgos during a week and then it returns back to the Monastery.

The festival of Agioi Anargiri on July 1 - Amorgos Cyclades Greece   The celebration takes place in Tholaria in the north part of Amorgos, the name day of the church. The hole village is full of people who eat, play traditional music and dance.
     
The festival of Agia Paraskevi on July 26 in Arkesini
The festival of Agia Paraskevi on July 26 in Arkesini - Amorgos Cyclades Greece   On this day the religious feast of Agia Paraskevi is celebrated in Arkesini in the south of Amorgos with food, local music and dancing.

This is the biggest celebration on Amorgos and attracts visitors and believers from all over Greece.

Festival of Panagia Panohoriani August 15 - Amorgos Cyclades Greece   In the day time is the ceremony at the church of Panagia and in the evening starts the celebrations all over the village of Langada with live music and food.
     
Festival of Stavros September 14
Festival of Stavros September 14 - Amorgos Cyclades Greece   The festival is hold in the really north end of the island and it’s about 2 hours walk from Langada. But it is worth to go there for the magic and beautiful place and then you get served the traditional Amorgian patatato, goat with potatoes.

Hozoviotissa is the protector of Amorgos and it is a local holiday which attracts visitors and believers from all over Greece.
